Application for the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2027: Cologne running as a candidate city

Cologne is one of the four cities included in the DFB’s (German Football Association’s) bid to host the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2027.

The association decided that Cologne, Dortmund, Duisburg and Düsseldorf had submitted the best applications out of all the national entries. The DFB has entered a joint bid with the KNVB (Royal Dutch Football Association) and the RBFA (Royal Belgian Football Association) to host the competition in four years’ time.

Lutz Wingerath, CEO of the KSS, said of the bid: “Cologne has always been a bastion of women’s football: the DFB Women’s Championship final is held here at the RheinEnergieSTADION every year. It is a highlight of the season and attracts a lot of attention in the city. Additionally, with the 2006 World Cup and numerous international matches under our belt, we have shown that our team is always ready to provide the framework for major football events. We are delighted and a little proud to have the opportunity to host another internationally recognised tournament in 2027, just three years after UEFA EURO 2024. The conditions at the RheinEnergieSTADION are perfect and the great enthusiasm of both the locals and our international guests will certainly create a unique atmosphere during the matches.”
